Roman Soldiers Mock Jesus (Day 65)

Read Mark 15:16-24

The Roman soldiers mocked Jesus by pretending to worship Him. Upon leading Jesus away to be crucified, the Roman soldiers forced Simon from Cyrene to carry the cross for Jesus. Colonies of Jews existed outside of Judea. Simon had made a Passover pilgrimage to Jerusalem all the way from Cyrene in North Africa. His sons, Alexander and Rufus, are mentioned here probably because they became well known later in the early church (Romans 16).

Pilate Hands Jesus Over To Be Crucidfied (Day 64)

Read Mark 15:6-15

Barabbas was arrested for his part in a rebellion against the Roman government, and, although he had committed murder, he may have been a hero to the Jews. The fiercely independent Jews hated to be ruled by pagan Romans. They hated paying taxes to support the despised government and its gods. Most of the Roman authorities who had to settle Jewish disputes hated the Jews in return. The time was ripe for rebellion.

Jesus Stands Trial Before Pilate (Day 63)

Read Mark 15:1-5

Why did the Jewish leaders send Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor? The Romans had taken away the Jews’ right to inflict capital punishment; so in order for Jesus to be condemned to death, He had to be sentenced by a Roman leader. The Jewish leaders wanted Jesus executed on a cross, a method of death that they believed brought a curse from God (Deuteronomy 21). They hoped to pursue the people that Jesus was cursed, not blessed by God.

Peter Denies Knowing Jesus (Day 62)

Read mark 14:66-72

Caiaphas’ house where Jesus was tried, was part of a huge palace with several courtyards. John was apparently acquainted with the high priest, and he was let into the courtyard along with Peter (John 18).

Jesus Betrayed And Arrested (Day 61)

Read Mark 14:43-65

Judas was given a small arresting party of police and soldiers (John 18) in order to seize Jesus and bring Him before the religious court for trial. The religious leaders had issued a warrant for Jesus’ arrest, and Judas was acting as Jesus’ official accuser.
